Dr. Suryadutt Venkat, MD, MPH is a board-certified physician specializing in Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, bringing over two decades of experience in providing comprehensive primary care to patients and their families. He is a compassionate physician who believes that outstanding medical care is built on a foundation of evidence-based medicine, empathy, attentive listening, and a genuine understanding of each patient's unique needs.
Dr. Venkat adopts a personalized, whole-person approach to healthcare, recognizing that every patient is more than just a diagnosis. He takes the time to listen to their concerns, understand personal health goals, clearly explain treatment options, and collaboratively develop a care plan tailored to their lives. His aim is to cultivate enduring relationships with his patients based on trust, respect, and open communication. Dr. Venkat speaks English, Hindi, and Kannada, so patients and families can discuss their health in the language they are most comfortable with.
His extensive medical training includes a medical degree from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Medical College in Bangalore, India, followed by a Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School before advancing his expertise through fellowship training in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Hawaii.
Dr. Venkat also has a strong academic background, having served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Massachusetts, where he contributed to the UMass Fitchburg Family Medicine Residency Program. In addition to teaching and mentoring future physicians, he held the position of Director of Geriatrics Education, helping physicians in training grasp the unique needs of older adults. He has remained engaged in clinical research and medical education throughout his career.
His unwavering dedication to medicine and teaching has earned him multiple accolades, including the Teacher of the Year Award from the UMass Fitchburg Family Medicine Residency Program, the Family Medicine Center Exemplary Resident Award, the Dr. Kenneth W. Faistl Future of Family Medicine Award, and an Academic Excellence Award from the Dean of the UAB School of Public Health.
Dr. Venkat has a specific passion for caring for older adults, assisting patients in managing chronic conditions, maintaining their independence, and enhancing their quality of life. He believes that providing care for older patients demands not only clinical expertise in Geriatric Medicine but also patience, compassion, and an appreciation for each individual's experiences, values, and goals. He also values the involvement of families and caregivers when appropriate.
